Pendulum timing mission

INVESTIGATION QUESTIONHow does string length change the time for a swing?

● ILLUSTRATIVE SCIENCE MODEL
ENGLISH CAPTIONS

Measure the pendulum length. A consistent length definition improves timing comparisons.

01 / SCIENCE

What explains the result?

For a small swing, a longer pendulum has a longer period; bob mass has little effect in this ideal model.

02 / EVERYDAY CONNECTION

Where does this matter?

Pendulum timing appears in clocks and helps compare repeating motion.

03 / MODEL LIMIT

What should you keep in mind?

Large release angles, a moving pivot, and stopwatch reaction time change a real result.

Pendulum timing room

Change one thing at a time. Measure ten swings, calculate one period, then compare how string length changes the rhythm.

0 RUNS

Run a measurement to add the first row. Repeat each length so you can compare trials instead of trusting a single swing.

WHAT THE PATTERN MEANS

A longer pendulum usually takes more time per swing. The ideal model predicts period depends on length and gravity, while bob mass has little effect. Real timing also includes reaction time, pivot friction, and how consistently the bob is released.

TRY THIS IN REAL LIFEHang a washer from string, mark one small release angle, and time 10 complete back-and-forth swings. Repeat at each length. This screen displays a teaching model, not a physical sensor measurement.Use a secure support, keep the swinging weight away from faces, and ask an adult before setting up the rig.Research basis: Science Buddies — Investigate the Motion of a Pendulum ↗
